Oct. 16, 2010 Mississippi River Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN Arkabutla Lake, MS An early morning trip to the Mississippi River, saw more mixed pods of grebes, coots and ducks floating down but only 2 Ring-billed Gulls and few swallows in the AM. White-crowned, Song, Swamp, lots of Savannah Sparrows and still ONE STEALTH NELSON'S SPARROW, which appeared after a lengthily wait, were at the North Treatment Plant. At Ensley Bottoms, 3 flocks of American White Pelicans, totaling 465 birds, winded their way south. Only Least Sandpipers, Dunlin, Wilson Snipe and Killdeer filled the shorebird card. For about an hour after that, hundreds of Black Vultures streamed south with a few Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Harriers and 2 Cooper's. At Mud Lake, my first of season Ring-necked Ducks were in good company with many Wood Ducks, gads of Gadwall, a couple of Wigeon, Mallards, Blue and Green-winged Teal, Shovelers, Hooded Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks. Winter is on the way. At Arkabutla Lake in Mississippi, I drove 3 miles down the mud flats to get a look at the gulls and found 350 plus Forster's Terns sitting and 57 in flight with 4 Common Terns in the mix. Best of show were 24 FRANKILN'S GULLS, 1 immature LAUGHING, 1 first year LESSER BLACK-BACKED, 1 adult Herring among the many Ring-billed Gulls. Two SANDERLING were in among the thousand or so Least Sandpipers along with a few Dunlin and many Killdeer, all enjoying the vast mud flats. White Pelicans were in every reach of the lake, a count and estimate went well over 3,000 birds. Three adult Bald Eagles kept everyone alert. Finally back on the Mississippi in the late afternoon at Memphis, 7 flyby FRANKLIN'S GULLS made a great finish on a beautiful DAY for the BIRDS. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
