------------------------------------- Date: Friday, February 14, 2003 2:57 PM From: Nancy_Gray@xxxxxxx Great Smoky Mountains News Release Immediate Release Contact: Date: February 14, 2003 865/436-1208 TRAFFIC LIMITED ON CADES COVE ROAD TEMPORARILY Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced plans to replace a culvert on the south side of Cades Cove Loop Road during February 24-March 2. The construction project will affect traffic and pedestrian use along the 11-mile one way road during this period. > > On Monday, February 24, the entire Loop Road will be closed to all public use. During that time, in addition to the culvert replacement on the south side of the Loop Road, a contractor will also be replacing a water drainage system at the entrance of the Cades Cove Loop Road. Since the entrance will be blocked, visitors will not be able to pass through the entrance to travel the loop road, but will be able to access the campground, picnic area, and ranger station. The work occurring February 25 through March 2 will only close a portion of the Loop Road. Therefore, visitors will be allowed to travel about 3.5 miles of the Loop Road as far as its intersection with Hyatt Lane (the second crossroad). At Hyatt Lane, they will detour across the valley to exit Cades Cove. The Hyatt Lane bypass will eliminate access to the Cades Cove Visitor Center and Cable Mill area as well as the several trailheads located on the western end of Cades Cove: Abrams Falls, Cooper Road, Rabbit Creek, and Wet Bottom Trails, and Gregory Ridge trailhead. > > The detour will shorten the length of the trip to an 8-mile tour of Cades Cove. > > "A storm last year damaged the foundation of the 80-foot concrete, low water creek crossing near the Dan Lawson Place," said Chief of Maintenance Shawn Benge. "But in addition to this problem, the stream has shifted over the years and Park Maintenance crews will also realign the drainage system with the stream flow." The Cades Cove Campground will remain open and is unaffected by the construction work. The Cades Cove Loop Road will reopen to all traffic and use on Monday, March 3. ===== ************************************************** Charlie Muise, Senior Naturalist Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont Townsend, TN lat 35 deg, 38'23" long 83 deg, 41'22" "Up, Sluggard, and waste not life; in the grave will be sleeping enough" - Ben Frankline, Poor Richard's Almanac __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
