Jay Desgrosellier seems to be having trouble posting to the list and asked me to forward this report for him. Mary Zimmerman Nashville, TN >For our August field trip, Nashville TOS ventured to Cross Creeks NWR in >search of shorebirds and waders. We were not disappointed as the ponds >below the headquarters held plenty of water with lots of good mud flats >appearing. Our first good find was 2 LEAST TERNS (an adult and an >immature)coursing around one of the ponds. Least Terns are rare anywhere >in middle Tennessee. These ponds held plenty of waders as well. Besides >the multitudes of GREAT EGRETS and GREAT BLUE HERONS there were also a few >each of GREEN HERONS, LITTLE BLUE HERONS and SNOWY EGRETS. We were very >pleased to find good numbers of shorebirds present. PECTORAL SANDPIPERS >were the most numerous with 100+ individuals present. Also found were 20+ >LEAST SANDPIPERS, 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY >SANDPIPERS, 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1 STILT SANDPIPER AND 1 BAIRD'S >SANDPIPER. A pretty good showing for middle Tennessee. While studying the >shorebirds, 6 FORSTER'S TERNS danced through the air around us. At the >Cumberland City Steam Plant we found an OSPREY flying about and at least >two BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were present in the large BLACK VULTURE >roost in the trees along the river. On our way back to Nashville we >stopped at the Cheatham Dam along the Cumberland River in Cheatham Co., TN. >We were happy to find a large concentration of BLACK TERNS below the dam. >At least 35 birds circled through the air like large swallows, making for >a very memorable site. > >Jay Desgrosellier >Field Trips Chair =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net Owner: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx (423) 764-3958 =========================================================
