They used to be boringly common in Roane County, flying above street lights
every night and chowing down on flying insects, and now I can't remember
the last time I heard one.

I went down the street to Ellington Ag Center this evening to look for
Common Nighthawks and saw 23 from the big parking lot on top of the hill.
Not a big number, but at least the birds outnumbered the floaters I was
looking through to see them. ;-) I didn't get there until 6:45 and started
seeing them right away, so there may have been more earlier. Always nice to
see them drifting by.
