Feb. 23, 2007 Shelby Farms Shelby Co, TN I was asked to check and see if any Cackling Geese were still hanging around Shelby farms. I got away a little early in the afternoon and started going through the many scattered flocks in the park. A large group flew into Patriot Lake and milled around above the lake flairing and circling not liking all the activity. A few broke off and went back west while others went east. In both flocks were segregated groups of smaller birds. I finally followed the larger group east to Germantown Road and located 12 Cackling Geese in with a good study of geese species and subspecies. Over all the area, in the fields and lakes, I recorded a nice variety of geese, 7 of the giant Canada Geese, tons of the interior Canadas, 16 Cackling, 6 Greater White-fronted, 2 Blue Geese, 1 Snow and 1 Ross's. Other waterfowl, included a pair of Black Ducks (unfortunately a Mallard male was continually trying the make out with the hen), Ruddy, Shoveler, Bufflehead, Gadwall, Mallard, Canvasback, Ring-neck, Wood Duck, Green-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup and Hooded Merganser. Seventeen waterfowl species in one hour in the city park. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
