Thanks to Chris Sloan for posting about us relocating the Glaucous Gull at Tennessee NWR, Duck River Unit this morning. Ed Schneider and I located the bird on the river just south of the island with all the Great Blue Heron nests (to the right as you face the island). It was originally seen loafing on the mud flats with several hundred ring-billed gulls but it swam off and then flew off and disappeared. We got to view the bird for only a few minutes before it was gone. The bird was completely white, and in a fleeting moment of calm winds, I could see the bicolored bill. At one point the bird was swimming next to a ring-billed gull, which gave a nice size comparison. It was about the size of a herring gull, if not a little larger. The bird flew downstream a minute later and was gone. I managed a series of ridiculous distant photos of a white blob flying away. Chris said the bird flew downstream and didn't return on Saturday, but it must be occasionally coming back to this mud flat. We searched through the gull flocks a couple times in the morning with no luck. Actually, I think the third time was the charm on this one! We didn't find a LeConte's sparrow (not from the lack of trying), but we did have 7 blue-winged teal from the observation blind and a lesser yellowlegs flyby. Good birding!
