The weather was perfect to ground large shorebirds that normally overfly us here in Memphis. The Hudsonian was early but wet, already showing much of its red breeding plumage on flanks. A second flush of rain, and I do mean flush, brought down two more large Wind Birds but they quickly dropped into some of the dug out pits in the center area. I did not get good enough looks to ID them through the down pour but they appeared much lighter in color than the Hudsonian but near that size. Other shorebird species were getting out of the splash in the mud flats and moving onto the gravel roads and short grass fields. Cattle Egrets and a Little Blue looked bedraggled standing in the rain at Horn Lake Cutoff and a total of 28 Black-b Whistlers were found today at various locations scattered from the Robco/Coro Lakes area to TVA Lake. I never get tired of being out in stormy weather during migration time;o) Jeff R.
