A pair of prothonotary warblers has been checking nest sites around our yard for the last couple of weeks. They went so far as to build nests in a bottle next to the carport, a hanging-basket type thing next to the kitchen window and a Gilbertson bluebird box in the woods next to the house. The warblers have been scarce around the house lately, perhaps, we thought, due to intense interest in their affairs by a cowbird. I went this morning to check the Gilbertson box and was thrilled to find three eggs. I was not so thrilled to also find a cowbird egg. The interloper egg was dispatched so now we can only hope that the warblers have not been wholly put off and frightened away.
