During the Nashville spring count yesterday, Ken Oeser and I discovered a Great Egret nest in the rookery in Drake's Creek, Old Hickory Lake, Sumner County. The nest is visible from Sanders Ferry Road. Height-wise, it is approximately mid-way up, and it is approximately one-third of the distance from the left edge of the island. The view is somewhat obfuscated by the trees, so you have to watch for the white of the adult birds. One of the adults was tending to the nest while we were there. The bulk of the rookery consists of Great-Blue Herons, Black-crowned Night-Herons, and an increasing number of Double-crested Cormorants, making it one of only a few known breeding locations for the latter species in Tennessee. What used to be the main rookery south of Loch 3 is now very much reduced due to the loss of a number of its larger trees over the winter. Only a handful of nests were observed, and very little bird activity. We did not observe any Cattle Egrets at either rookery; this species has been present at the Loch 3 rookery in good numbers for quite a few years now. They are usually very late to arrive, but I'm afraid the combination of the degradation of the Loch 3 rookery and the early starts by the other species may have driven them out.
