Aug. 18, 2002 Island 13 - Lake Co. TN I found an adult male, Great-tailed Grackle "strolling down the river" and watched the bird for over 15 minutes from inside 100' with a 30X Ziess 85 mm Scope. Before I could get back to my truck for the camera, a 4 wheeler flushed the 200 White Pelicans and the bird plus a large number of American and Fish Crows that it was feeding around left in a flurry. The bird was feeding along the rivers edge. When seen in close proximity of the crows it was longer than the smaller Fish Crows and about the same length as the American Crows but much lighter in body. The bill and top of the head were on the same plane and the iridescent color of the head and shoulders was a shiny purple. The color of the mantle and coverts had a greenish sheen. The tail was impressively long and extremely flared forming a wide V. Notes and field drawings were made at the time I had the bird in the scope. The bird was found near the waters edge at the west end of the northern most rock dike and was seen between 10 and 10:30 AM. I called Ken Leggett and we covered the area between the two dikes and only found a single molting adult Golden-Plover. This is the second time I have located this species in this area. The previous sighting was made by myself and Larry Peavler, a birder from Indiana with extensive field experience across the ABA area. Two birds a male and female type were seen and photographed just south of Island 13 on the Great River Road at the Dyer-Lake County line on July 3, 2000. Anyone birding the area should be on the lookout for this species in West, TN. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
