The Western Grebe was still on Norris Lake this morning (Sunday, Aug. 25)
between 11am and noon.
Nell Moore and I first saw the bird about 800 yards from the point by the
bridge as described in the directions (see below). But we were able to move to
a closer spot, about 300 yards from the bird. With a scope at 45X, this
beautiful bird was easy to see clearly. As others have described it, the black
"hood" extended fully and clearly below the red eye--a field mark that should
identify it as an adult Western Grebe still in breeding plumage. The bird
preened in front of us for about 10 minutes continuously, so we got very good
long looks.
At one point the bird dived and we were unable to observe it surface for
approximately 5 minutes (or perhaps longer), with both of us scanning the water
constantly. It is possible the bird broke the surface with its head to get a
breath and we missed it. Does anyone know how long this species can stay under?
