Spring firsts today in Greene County: Green Heron (observed by Jim Holt and Don Miller in lower end of Paint Creek Recreation Area, just north of French Broad River); Black-throated Green Warbler (3 observed by Holt and Miller in lower end of PCRA; 1 observed by Holt in Tweed Springs area in southern portion of county). Paint Creek Recreation Area, known locally as an ideal nesting site for Louisiana Waterthrush, was utterly devastated by the flooding in Greene County last August. Jim and I saw no suitable waterthrush habitat today and found no waterthrushes. We had limited time at the site and couldn't check the middle portion of the area, but it appears likely no habitat survived. I've seen lots of flood damage before, but PCRA defies description. "Carpet bombing" is the term that comes to mind when I try to indicate what it's like now. The creek is much wider and shallower, there is little streamside vegetation, and in many places bedrock several feet below the old creekbed is exposed.
