Friday 30 SEP 2005 Clyde Austin 4-H Center, Greene Co., TN D. Holt After seeing a NASHVILLE WARBLER yesterday, I found another at the same spot today. I think its a different individual because the yellow is not as intense on this second one. The spot is across Whirlwind Rd. from the 4-h Center on property belonging to the UT Extension Research and Education Center (previously known as the Tobacco Experiment Station). A small corner of trees and shrubs adjacent to extensive hayfields has yielded good migrant sightings. Besides the Nashville Warbler today, there was also an EMPIDONAX sp. present. If I had to guess, I would say LEAST FLYCATCHER. Also, at the top of the same hill in a weedy hayfield with clumps of Johnson Grass, I heard and then saw two SEDGE WRENS, (with help from Rusty the Birder Dog). The fencerow through the field held several PALM WARBLERS, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and nine SAVANNAH SPARROWS. Scattered around the field were many EASTERN MEADOWLARKS in non-breeding plumage, while the sky above the fields was full of TREE SWALLOWS. An AMERICAN KESTREL momentarily harrassed a young RED-TAILED HAWK in a treetop before joining another kestrel hunting grasshoppers from a fencepost perch. RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS are still active in the area, I saw four or five, mostly in the wetland at the bottom of the hill. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's field trips at the TOS Fall Meeting in Greeneville, the weather seems to have set the stage perfectly for a great weekend. Hope you can join us.
