13 November 2014 Hamilton County, TN I have tallied some of my numbers from the last 12 years of banding at Greenway Farms. Until 2013, I ran 7 nets, 3 days a week, from sunrise until noonish, primarily late March-late May and late August-late October. I will occasionally band outside of the migration periods if TOS wants we to do a banding demo, or if I have students who want to learn about banding. In 2013 and 2014, I had a graduate student who was netting in a different area of Greenway Farms. She ran 8 nets, and I added an additional net to my area so our effort would be balanced. If I do not find someone to help run the second area, I will go back to only netting in my area. So here are the numbers: We have banded 4,086 individuals of 92 species. I have also caught 4 species for which I either did not have the proper band sizes and/or was not permitted to band; Sharp-shinned Hawk (1), Red-shouldered Hawk (2), Barred Owl (1), and Ruby-throated Hummingbird (5). The top 5 species are White-throated Sparrow (338), Northern Cardinal (333), Magnolia Warbler (331), Field Sparrow (169), and Hooded Warbler (162). Banding lifers (birds I had not banded before) are Pileated Woodpecker (2), Hairy Woodpecker (1), Lincoln's Sparrow (1), Vesper Sparrow (1), Marsh Wren (1), and Mourning Warbler (3). I have not tallied my recaptures yet, but a pretty good estimate would be 550 individuals that I have recaptured at least once. Most of those are resident species, although I did have a Hermit Thrush I banded in 2002 that returned every year for the next 7 years! I have had 2 birds I banded show up elsewhere, both being Brown Thrashers. One bird was found dead in Fayette, AL, and the other was found dead near Statesboro, GA. I have yet to capture a bird that someone else has banded. I thank the students who have helped me over the years; Sam Clark, Kim Jones, Laura Marsh, Heidi Messerly, Jessica Schutte. I also thank the people who have come out to see and learn about the banding, as well as the City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Dept. and the staff at Greenway Farms for allowing me to work out there.
