16 Dec 2003, Tuesday I just talked with Martha Waldron, one of the three who saw the Common Ground-Dove on President's Island on the Memphis CBC on Sunday. Unfortunately, the bird was seen behind a gated fence on Corps property which is off-limits to the public. (Martha had made special arrangements for count day) The Blue-winged Warbler was seen by Dick Preston and Van Harris. I have never been to the North Treatment Plant and don't know how to get there. It would be of interest, however, to see if the bird sticks around. Mute Swan has been reported on Memphis CBC almost every year for about ten or more years, now. There are a few lakes and other bodies of water in northeast Memphis where the swan hangs out. Skye Lake is the usual place. There has been only one bird the last few years; earlier there were as many as four or five. I have been giving the Mute Swans the benefit of the doubt as to their origin. Wild birds have been found in other parts of TN and nearby states and have recently become rather common locally in the Mid-west. It was reported that residents of Skye Lake indicated that the birds were not tame nor were they placed there. And the swans wandered, sometimes as far as Shelby Farms. Evidently, the swans at one time bred in this area. I cannot prove that their origin is wild, but I think that it is very possibly so, and that their numbers should be tracked via the CBC.
