Haven't seen anything posted here so for those not following eBird, the
Harris's Sparrow that has been seen sparingly at Seven Islands SBP (Knox Co)
this winter has been showing well this week. I ran out this morning (4/13)
before work and finally got the bird after dipping earlier this winter.
From the parking lot, walk out the paved road all the way to the end
(roughly a mile). Look for the Chimney Swift tower on your left by the
last house. Cross the small strip of broomsedge on the opposite side and
head toward the river. Look and listen for a mixed Zonotrichia flock
(White-throats, White-crowns, and the Harris's) often with some Cardinals
and Towhees. Seems to be hanging out in this general area pretty
consistently but may take some patience (it didn't this morning though).
I quickly first spotted them feeding in the mowed section just beyond the
broomsedge, but they flushed to the brushpile in the mowed section and
then to the treeline along the river where they stayed the rest of the
time I was there (about an hour). They seemed rather skitish not allowing
close approach (there was a Kestrel in the area, too) and often retreating
deep into the brush (that passes for mesquite here I guess) or tops of the
trees (so save yourself some trouble and turn off the auto-focus early).
Twice I had the bird feeding along the mowed path along the river, but it
flushed as soon as I lifted the camera.
I managed a few distant shots through the limbs but nothing great. Had
better luck with some Gnatcatchers building a nest on the walk back.
