We started up the Big Bald (Unicoi County) banding station this last
week. I hope to continue this tradition begun 25 years ago this year by
my father. In fact, the station is expanding this year to include a
hawk focused banding program being spearheaded by Kathy Gunther of
Seattle and Mark Hopey, a friend and long time helper at our station.
We had nothing unusual except that no Tennessees have come through yet.
Everything seems to be local birds ? Black-throated blues and Juncos are
the majority of birds so far, with a few Solitary vireos, Ovenbirds, a
Hooded Warbler and a Phoebe thrown in for good measure. Broad wings are
already on the move, and we spotted one Red-tail that was apparently
migrating and a juvenile Peregrine that was definitely on the hunt. I
watched him dive from way up into a wooded area at very high speed
(awesome!). If you are in East Tennessee and want to drop in, give me a
shout via email or phone (828-453-9110) and I?ll call the security
guards at Wolf Laurel to get them to give you access.
