July 26 and 27, 2013 Some friends living near Country Club Road off of Hwy 79 North in Paris reported a "strange hawk" to me yesterday. They saw and photographed it perched in a dead tree in their yard. When they said it had a "white head," I guessed Mississippi Kite. The bird returned to the same tree this morning. I came to see it, but it left the area shortly before I arrived. My friends' good photos confirmed the ID... it was an adult Mississippi Kite. My friends had recently seen two "strange hawks" flying around over their yard, and when I described the feeding behavior of a kite, they enthusiastically agreed that was how the birds flew. I showed them photos and bird guides and they pointed to the correct bird. This family has the potential to get into birding, and they were excited about the unusual bird. July 27, 2013 1:00 pm As I was driving in the western portion of Henry County later today, I saw a bird perched on a wire along an agricultural field which fit the profile of a perched Loggerhead Shrike. I did not have binoculars, but could make out some ID points such as the bold black markings and pale belly and the general shape and posture of a shrike. I pulled over in a driveway and got a blurry but diagnostic photo by leaning out of my window awkwardly. Traffic drove by and the bird left its perch twice, swooping back up to come to rest in the same place. I saw the white wing crescents as it did this. After I turned around and came back by, the bird was gone. We don't see many shrikes in Henry County.... I haven't seen one in YEARS. Our daughter saw this one and was able to add a new bird to her life list. This was off of Hwy 54 near Yoder Brothers Meat Processing. We may check the area again.
