10/31/03 Big Sandy Unit; Pace Point Henry/Benton Co. A very quick trip this morning to Big Sandy and Pace Point, produced little in the way of surprises. Best find was a Henslow's Sparrow at Big Sandy, in the field immediately below the new information stand just after you enter the refuge. Jeff Wilson has had Henslow's late in the year at this location before. This field also had several Lincoln's among the many sparrows using the area. Bonaparte's Gull numbers are definitely coming up, but the only "good" gull was an adult Lesser Black-backed sitting on the water in the bay at Lick Creek. American White Pelicans were also at this location, and a group of 12 were soaring just east of Pace Point. Common Loon numbers are slowly climbing, as are Horned Grebe numbers. Diving ducks are still pretty scarce, although I keep hoping to run across a Scoter trying to sneak through. The usual raft of Ruddies off the west side of Pace Point is taking shape, but has a long way to go to reach it's usual size. Several gulls were resting on the Point, but other than 3 Herrings, they were all Ring-billed Gulls. Lack of time prevented me from checking anywhere else. Maybe the area will get a little more coverage over the weekend, and a nice bird will turn up. Good birding!!
