Sunday, May 29, 2005 Tullahoma TN, Coffee County The first annual Festival of Wings cosponsored by Operation Migration was held at the Tullahoma airport over the weekend. Linda Kelly, Sarah Scott and myself went down on Sunday to enjoy the exhibits, light aircraft demonstrations and sample the area birding. We got our target birds easier than planned. On Saturday Ruth Luckado of Highland Rim TOS was leading field trips to Bark Camp Barrens, a TWRA property with nesting HENSLOW'S SPARROWS. That site is some 40 minutes distance from the airport, but on returning to the airport they heard a Henslow's singing next to the parking area! On Sunday when we arrived Ruth had her scope set up and within a few yards of the festival area we had both HENSLOW'S and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS for great views and comparison of two similar species. The sparrows were in an unmowed area with broomsedge and other tall grasses, blackberry vines and sweet gum saplings. We had at least two singing Henslow's, they perched in the saplings and were quite cooperative for viewing. The Grasshopper Sparrow went from mowed short grass to tall weeds. Tullahoma and the airport are in the southeast corner of Coffee County, adjoining Moore and Bedford Counties. Similar habitats could be checked in those counties and possibly turn up more of these birds. Sarah S. also got her life look at N. BOBWHITE QUAIL, a bird more often heard than seen.
