The Henslow's Sparrows are back at Bridgestone/Firestone Wildlife Management Area on the Cumberland Plateau in White County. I was there this morning (April 22) and counted 14 singing birds and found two others that I took to be females (one carrying food and the other was with a singing bird) among the several hundred acres of high quality warm season native grasses. Also there were 3 N. Bob-Whites calling and another flushed, 2 Sedge Wrens singing from the tall grass, and a male and female N. Harrier present. Some of the sparrows were heard and seen along Eastland Road from the easternmost parking area (the one where the gate is about 100 yards from the road). On the way there before dawn I heard 6 Whip-poor-wills (one also flushed from the road) in western Cumberland County near the intersection of Flat Rock Road and Flynn's Cove Road. The regenerating clearcuts here have been reliable for them in previous years. -Ed LeGrand Cumberland County =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
