I located 15+ singing Henslow=92s sparrows and 2 Grasshopper sparrows yesterday (April 10) here at Fort Campbell (Montgom= ery cty, TN). This is the earliest date, over the last 4 years, that either of these species has been detected returning= from migration. The previous earliest return dates for HESP and GRSP were April 18 and 19, respectively, in 2000. I also located 2 singing Sedge wrens yesterday. I suspect that at least one of these birds over-wintered. On December 5= , 2001 I observed one wren not more than 150 yards from yesterdays sighting. I also heard a Sedge wren on March 12, 2002= near the December location. According to Robinson, these birds are occasionally found in western and middle TN during t= he winter. Would this qualify as a wintering bird based upon these sightings?
