I saw 8 immature bald eagles and 2 adults in the vicinity of Hiwassee Island in
Meigs Co. at Birchwood early this morning. I also saw around 6 ospreys. I
didn't see or hear any sandhill cranes this morning. I saw or heard a few small
flocks last week. The last time I saw significant numbers of sandhills was at
dawn March 6 when 200 - 300 flew away from north of Hiwassee Island. I've not
been in the area at dawn or dusk very often lately, and the water has been
quite high, covering most of the mudbars the cranes use for roosting.
Therefore, I don't know if most sandhill cranes are already gone north or not.
I assured many visitors to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge this winter that
virtually all the sandhills would be gone from the area by March 1. Wrong
again! I think I'd better stick to reporting observations rather than making
predictions!
