I observed 13 white pelicans near Hiwassee Island from the Cherokee Removal
Memorial Park overlook near Birchwood in Meigs County around 8 AM today. Two
immature bald eagles were seen in the same area. Hundreds of coots remain in
the vicinity of the island, as well. Counting ducks seen at the CRMP and/or at
the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge viewing area, four species were identified -
ring-necked, mallard, gadwall, and Northern shoveler. Near my home in the
Hamilton County part of Birchwood, I had my best look to-date of the "ruby
crown" on a ruby-crowned kinglet. Perhaps it was not too happy with my
presence. I also saw a golden-crowned kinglet in the same area at the same time.
