About 20 members of a wildlife management class from UTK joined about a dozen other wildlife watchers in Meigs County at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge viewing area and the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park Sunday afternoon. Interestingly, not one sandhill crane was in either area at the time I was there. However, a number of sandhills remain in the area. Around 100 were seen near the Rhea Co. airport on Saturday, and 500 or more were reported on Birchwood Pike in Hamilton Co. on Saturday. I heard sandhill cranes over Birchwood about 7:30 p.m. tonight. Apparently they were migrating northward on this clear night. One adult bald eagle was seen from the CRMP unsuccessfully trying to intimidate an immature bald eagle into abandoning its fish near Hiwassee Island, and a few ring-billed gulls were nearby looking for bits of fish dropped into the water by the eagle. At least 14 great blue herons were also observed in the water and on the nests in the rookery on Hiwassee Island. Numerous double-crested cormorants were also in the area around the island.
