I went to the Hiwassee Refuge in Meigs Co, TN, this morning to see if the Whooping Crane reported yesterday by David Trently was still there. My cat didn't go with me. She stayed at home snoozing under the blankets. But she never goes birding with me....don't know why I brought this up..... The Whooper was easily seen, but at a distance, as it foraged along with the several thousand Sandhill Cranes. I was finally able to see the leg bands as it moved through the Sandhills. The left leg has a green upper band, and a silver (yellow?) lower band. The silver band is about twice as wide as the green. The right leg has three bands, red on top, then green, then another red. While I watched/listened to the cranes, a female N Harrier landed on a snag fairly close to the observation platform. Excellent look at the face. Few ducks were seen, mostly Mallards, four Gadwalls, some Buffleheads.
