On the last day before the Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival, one observer at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood saw the hooded crane drop out of sight behind a hill across the slough from the viewing area. It was not seen again, as far as I know. NUMEROUS sandhill cranes were in view all day and should provide great viewing over the weekend at the crane festival. Brian Fox Ellis, who will be presenting his 'John James Audubon' stories at the festival, and I saw at least 4 whooping cranes on Hiwassee Island from the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park overlook near dark. Out of town visitors who might not know how to get to Birchwood Elementary School for the crane festival can use the link below to get to Birchwood. The school is right on state highway 60. Visitors to the crane festival, unless handicapped, will NOT be permitted to drive to the refuge. Shuttle buses will take visitors from the school to the refuge. While you MAY drive to the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park, there is not a large amount of parking there, so the shuttle buses will also be the most convenient way to get to the CRMP. http://www.tnwatchablewildlife.org/watchareadetails.cfm?uid=09071608273977728®ion=Hiwassee_Refuge&statearea=East_Tennessee Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
