Thousands of sandhill cranes remain on the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs and Rhea counties as of today, Thursday, December 30. It was a great day for those who came to photograph the cranes. The sandhill cranes were particularly active near the HWR viewing area at the gazebo. From the nearby Cherokee Removal Memorial Park viewing area near dusk, 1 whooping crane, 4 great egrets, 1 mute swan, hundreds of ducks, and thousands of sandhill cranes were seen. I did not see any bald eagles today, but two adults were seen from the Rhea Co. Blythe Ferry landing yesterday. Two immature bald eagles were seen at the Meigs Co. HWR gazebo yesterday.
