Did anyone have the same experience we had with Ruby-throated Hummingbirds yesterday? On Saturday the numbers increased dramatically as we could count about 60 birds around at one time; given the formula experts use of 5 times what can be seen at one moment, there must have been at least 300. About 2 weeks ago when we were sure all the babies were able to migrate, we took down 3 of our 6 feeders to encourage some of them to move on. There were approximately 400-500 at feeders at our house and our neighbor across the street at that time and so many moved on that we had only about 100-150 since that time. Yesterday when the numbers increased dramatically again we put up another feeder because the hummers were literally stacked on top of each other at the 3 feeders. Then this morning after they fed most left and tonight we had only about 75 remaining. Warblers and Vireo numbers have decreased also in the last week although we have added Orange-crowned, Golden-winged, Nashville, and Blue-winged warblers to bring our September total to 21 species and our yard total for the month to 81. We sure wish we could have identified some of the birds we saw last night as we set up the scopes and watched them move across the sky with the full moon in the background.
