On Friday, August 15, my husband and I were walking in William Hastie
Natural Area, which is part of South Knoxville's Urban Wilderness. There is
a place on the Margaret Road trail that used to have a big patch of kudzu.
Last fall, the city did something to rip out the kudzu, and other things
have been growing back. This area is near several small sinkholes. The
jewelweed and partridge pea plants are in full bloom, and we saw so many
Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds we couldn't count them.
If you are not familiar with Hastie, here are directions: From downtown
Knoxville, take the James White Parkway across the South Knoxville Bridge
to the end of the road. Turn left, go to the stop sign at a KenJo market
and continue straight. You will be on Sevierville Pike. After a straight
stretch, the road becomes very twisty. Look for Margaret Road (or Lane) on
the right. The park is at the dead end of Margaret Road. Take the gravelly
path between two boulders and the old kudzu field is just a couple hundred
yards ahead.
