About 15 minutes ago, I had a bird visit my bird creek. I am about 6 paces from the creek or less, however, I did not have my binos. At first glance, I thought the bird was a female grosbeak, and then I realized the bird was too small and the eye stripe not quite right. As it leaned over to take a drink, it had black and white stripes on its crown (not a white crowned or a white throated sparrow). It had a beak like a grosbeak. I would guess it was the same size as a house sparrow. (It was definitely smaller than the brown thrasher it had just replaced.) The bird appeared tall and "lanky" but with a very thick "muscle builder" neck/head. The head seemed very misplaced for the body. It was a brownish bird (in shade so hard to tell exact color) and it had one wing bar - white - with black on the wing as well. That's the best I'll be able to do with a description. I was caught without pen/paper or binoculars. I've already looked through the field guides and nothing resembles the bird. I could be wrong about the black on the wing...but I know I am right about the rest.
