I could not help but notice that even though we have had the coldest temperatures of the winter lately, many birds are already thinking of spring. I spent about two hours yesterday birding at The Honors golf course in Ooltewah. I heard Tufted Titmice singing their mating or territory calls. I saw the first big flock of Red-wing Blackbirds coming back. I also saw a Northern Flicker going in and out of hole in a dead tree. During the two hours I saw a total of 39 species. Misses I usually see were: Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Brown Creeper, Brown Thrasher and Rusty Blackbird. Birds seen include: Mallard Wild Turkey Great Blue Herron Turkey Vulture Cooper's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Killdeer Ring-billed Gull (the golf course lake is partially drained every winter and that is what attracts them) Morning Dove Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Blue Jay American Crow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Brown-headed Nuthatch Carolina Wren Golden-crowed Kinglet (several - unusual for me to see that many) Ruby-crowned Kinglet Eastern Bluebird Hermit Thrush American Robin Northern Mockingbird Yellow-rumped Warbler Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Fox Sparrow Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal Red-winged Blackbird House Finch American Goldfinch David Stone Ooltewah, Tn.
