Jackson Christmas bird Count Madison County Saturday, December 31 The Jackson CBC was held on Saturday, December 31st. The weather was fantastic. The low was 39 and the high was 63 with clear skies and a slight breeze out of the south at 5-10mph. Four participants tallied 81 species. The most unexpected species of the count was a single Northern Rough-winged Swallow. I found this bird early Saturday morning sitting on an electric wire near a trucking terminal in the Jackson Inustrial Park. This is the first time that I've ever encountered this species in the winter and needless to say it was a first for the Jackson CBC. Other highlights were: Snow Goose - 5 (flyovers heard while owling after dark) Red-breasted Merganser - 3 (seen with other ducks on a large private pond) Ring-billed Gull - a single bird at Lake Graham Loggerhead Shrike - 1 (found on Riverside Drive not far from the Forked Deer River) Fish Crow - 1 (flyover at the UT Agr. Exp. Station) Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1 (heard calling fron the pines at the UT Agr. Exp. Station) Pine Warbler - 3 (all at the UT Agr. Exp. Station, 2 in the pines and one with E. Bluebirds sitting on a power line) Chipping Sparrow - 15 (flock found in a yard on Old Bells Road) Fox Sparrow - 7 (several different locations) Purple Finch - 2 (found at the UT Agr. Exp. Station in a mixed feeding flock) Notable misses were many: Wild Turkey, N. Bobwhite, American Coot, Wilson's Snipe. American Woodcock, E. Screech-Owl, American Pipit, Lapland Longspur, and Brewer's Blackbird. I'll post the full list later. Participants were Bob Ford, Mark Greene, Kathy Sellars, and Allan Trently.
