The Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will sponsor the following field trip on December 7, 2002. Remember Pearl Harbor. The remainder of the weekends will be occupied by Christmas Bird Counts. Saturday December 7, 2002, 8:00 AM Field trip to Tellico Dam area beaver ponds and adjacent waters and fields. Leader Wes James (988-2433) Meet in the Tellico Canal Bathhouse/parking area adjacent to the canal that connects Tellico and Fort Loudon Reservoirs. This area is reached by taking the first exit after crossing the Fort Loudon Dam bridge. The exit says Tellico Village, Route 444. After taking this exit you go straight across the Tellico Parkway (Route 444) to the bathhouse and parking area. Same road that goes to the Tellico Canal boat ramp. We will visit beaver pond areas adjacent to the dam as well as the open water areas of the reservoirs. There is also a lot of early succession "sparrow" habitat. Expect to see several waterfowl and wading bird species, sparrows, raptors, and numerous other passerines. This field trip will cover an area not covered in previous field trips to the area. We could finish up before lunch time, but bring water and a snack. Walking should be fairly moderate.
