[TN-Bird] Re: KTOS field trip to Campbell Co.

Thanks to the wonderful members of the KTOS we had a great day of birding
andgot 7 life birds and 3 year birds. A more helpful and cordial group of
people could not be found anywhere. We finished out the day with a female
yellow warbler in our backyard

Tn-birders,
This morning we had a field trip to Cove Lake and Cross Mountain in Campbell
County. It was a pretty day and for a change, not freezing cold in the
morning. Highlights of the day were:
At Cove lake -
1 - The Swainson's Warbler has returned to Cove Lake. It was singing in the
back (northern most part of the lake) near the observation tower. There has
been a Swainson's in this area for the past few years. Special thanks to
NellMoore, who's sharp ears picked out the call.
2 - In the same area Nell also heard a Northern Waterthrush. I was able to
get a brief glimpse of it before it flew away not to be seen again.
3 - A couple of Baltimore Orioles were spotted and provided the required
oohsand aahs.
4 - A few people got on a Gray-cheeked Thrush briefly, but it soon
disappeared
5 - We all got a great look at a Wood Thrush out on the walking path.
6 - Several Great Crested Flycatchers were seen.
7 - I think all of us got a decent look at a Prothonotary Warbler. There
werea pair around the observation tower.
8 - Most of us got a good look at a Nashville Warbler and a Magnolia Warbler
and there were lots of Gray Catbirds about.
9 - Eastern Wood-Pewee was heard only.
10 - we saw 3 nicely plumaged Spotted Sandpipers at the observation tower
along with a Solitary Sandpiper.
At Cross Mountain -
1 - The Golden-winged Warblers have come back in and after Nell spotted one
finally, we got it in the scope for several minutes. Dollyann and I had been
there a week ago and couldn't find any.
2 - Thanks to Nell, we all got good looks at Chestnut-sided and Cerulean
Warblers. There were lots of American Redstarts about and we heard, but
didn't see, several Kentucky Warblers.
3 - I did my Barred Owl hoot and eventually one surrendered to hoot back,
butnobody ever saw it.
4 - Blue Headed and Yellow-throated Vireos put in nice appearances.
In all, including heard birds, we had 17 species of warblers. Thanks to all
the participants for helping find the birds.
