TN-birders, Carole Gobert, Robin Barrow, Jerry Ledbetter, and Tony King joined Dollyann and myself for a field trip to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park (GSMNP) in Sevier County to search for some of the higher elevation specialties. Mostly it was a slow day, with little bird song, but we did manage to find and see some of the birds. Below is a list of the day's results. Great Blue Heron - flyover at School House Gap trail Common Nighthawk - 3 seen by Jerry only at our breakfast stop on Alcoa Highway Chimney Swift Acadian Flycatcher - seen well on nature trail behind Sugarlands Visitor Center Eastern Phoebe - Sugarlands Yellow-throated Vireo - Heard only at Sugarlands Blue-headed Vireo - Seen well on trail at back of Newfound Gap parking lot and Indian Gap trail American Crow Black-capped Chickadee - Seen well at Newfound Gap and Indian Gap trail Red-breasted Nuthatch - heard only at Indian Gap trail Carolina Wren Winter Wren - seen briefly at pullout about 2 miles below Clingman's Dome Golden-crown Kinglet - Seen well on Indian Gap trail about 100 yards in Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - seen at Sugarlands Veery - seen pretty well at trail behind Newfound Gap parking lot and at pullout below Clingman's Dome Wood Thrush American Robin Cedar Waxwing - several seen in the parking lot area at Clingman's Dome Chestnut-sided Warbler - one heard at School House Gap trailhead parking lot Black-throated Green Warbler - one seen pretty well on trail behind Newfound Gap parking lot Worm-eating Warbler - one heard only on School House Gap trail Louisiana Waterthrush - a couple seen very well on nature trail behind Sugarlands Canada Warbler - one seen pretty well at a pullout a couple of miles below Clingman's Dome parking lot Dark-eyed Junco - several seen well feeding young at Newfound Gap trail Indigo Bunting - couple seen well higher up in the mountains Brown-headed Cowbird - 1 female seen at the Canada Warbler pullout Thanks to all the participants for helping find the birds.
