9/21/05
KY Lake area of Henry Co.

An unexpected day off put me back at KY Lake today, for a quick look around. The lake is up a few tenths of a foot, and this has claimed a good bit of the exposed flats that are out.

I started out walking the levee into the flats at the mouth of the Big Sandy River. Passerines were numerous, with multiple Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, and Northern Parula Warblers. Other warblers seen on the day included Blue-winged, Pine, Bay-breasted and Common Yellowthroat. A couple of Philadelphia Vireos were also noted. The flats themselves weren't as productive as when I was here last week. Most of the recent drawdown, which had time to become productive, was submerged again. I had about 10 minutes to scope the flats before a young Peregrine came through and put everything into hide mode. A Sharp-shin had come through earlier, without creating much of a fuss. Among the Killdeer and few Pectorals and Least were 2 Ruddy Turnstones and a Semipalmated Plover. I saw no larger peeps, and none of the long-legged species.

Pace Point finally had a couple of shorebirds on it, 2 Greater Yellowlegs (but still no Killdeer). The gathering of Ring-bills and Caspian Terns was much smaller than last week, but held a juvenile Laughing Gull.

The Eagle Creek flats are still extensive (and very grassy), but held only a dozen Pectorals and a single Baird's Sandpiper, among the Killdeer. Dabbling Ducks are definitely getting more numerous, as there were a few Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, and Pintail, among the Blue-winged Teal and Shovelers.

My last stop, was to check the island at Paris Landing. Though it is smaller in size, it was still packed full of birds. Among the mass I could easily pick out the adult Lesser Black-backed, and two juvenile Laughing Gulls. There could easily be a good bird, such as a Sabine's, resting among the stacked-up birds without being seen. I had scanned through a couple of times before the birds shuffled enough for the Laughers to become visible. Maybe next time.

Good Birding!!
