I ran out to Kingston Steam Plant in Roane Co, TN, Saturday evening (28 July 2007) to see if the rains brought in any shorebirds. For the first time this season, Killdeer were outnumbered by non-Killdeer. Several dozen (50-60+) EASTERN NARROWMOUTH TOADs were calling in the many rain puddles, especially right at the parking lot by the soccer fields. Try as I might, I could not photograph one. The heavy rains this week (FINALLY!) have raised the level of the main pond putting most of the flats the birds have been on the last few weeks under water. Many of the birds were in the grass on the large penninsula on western side of the main pond (closest to the parking lot) which was also partly under water. Counting was difficult as the birds moved around in the grass and best counting was on a couple of occassions when the birds were flushed by an Osprey. birds of note: Killdeer, ~20 Lesser Yellowlegs, at least 12 Spotted Sandpiper, 8 Semipalmated Sandpiper, ~10 Least Sandpiper, ~40 Pectoral Sandpiper, 2 STILT SANDPIPER, 5 adults, starting to moult but mostly still in breeding plumage Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
