I have been looking for a Fish Crow nest in Knox County for several years.
They are seen regularly now along the Tennessee River from the University
of Tennessee all the way down to Louisville Point Park.
About two weeks ago I saw a crow fly out of the top of a pine tree.
Something about its trajectory as it left the tree made me think nest, and
I was able to spot a pile of sticks in the vicinity of where the crow came
from. I then heard a Fish Crow and was fairly certain it came from the
bird I had just seen, but not positive. Also wasn¹t positive the sticks
were a crow nest vs a squirrel nest.
About a week later I saw another crow fly from the same tree, but it
stayed quiet and did not return in the few minutes that I watched.
Today (April 25) my wife and I went by the same area and saw a crow on a
lower branch of the pine next to the suspected nest tree. It seemed to be
arranging a food item in its beak, and I stopped to see if it would go to
the nest. It took several minutes but eventually it worked its way up the
branches to about 20¹ from the nest. At that point a 2nd crow hopped out
of the nest and swooped down next to the first. They flew to another line
of pines and had an interesting interaction with lots of feather ruffling,
soft vocalizations, and a nice ³Uh-uh² call. The crows seemed to be
fairly secretive around the nest tree and clearly nervous about being
watched. They did not want to come back to the tree while I was standing
there, so I moved further off. About a minute later, one of the Fish
Crows flew directly back to the original pine and landed at the nest.
Success!
