A couple reports of Ross's Goose and some wintering hummers from around the Knoxville area: First: David Howell called me today after he spotted a Ross's Goose at the Pellissippi State pond in west Knox County. I ran across the street after lunch to look for it. As I drove in there were no birds on the pond but a few Canadas on the hill behind the upper parking lot. They took flight and were joined by a couple of smaller white birds that had been hidden from view. They all flew to the pond where I was able to photograph 1 ROSS'S GOOSE and 1 immature white morph SNOW GOOSE. Hopefully they'll stick around for the Knoxville CBC on 3 January. Also at the pond were 3 MUSCOVY DUCKs and three Canada Geese amongst the hordes that were sporting neck collars --- black-on-white: X31E, X42E, and X47E. Second: When I called to set up access at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery in Clinton (Anderson Co., TN) for the Norris CBC this weekend, Mike Smith told me that a possible Ross's Goose had been hanging around at the hatchery. Hope to find him for the count. And finally: There have been (and still are as far as I know) at least 4 hummers in west Knox County. The famous "Tennessee Lady" female Rufous that I believe now holds the longevity record for the species, 2 Rufous/Allen's and a fourth mystery bird. Again, hopefully all will be around for the Knoxville CBC.
