Amber and I took in the big concert at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville
on Saturday as part of our one-year anniversary celebration.

Throughout the day, a good number of swallows were swirling around
inside of the stadium. Most were Cliff Swallows with up to 20 or so
present at a time. I know there's a large colony under the Alcoa
Highway bridge and a few where Neyland Drive crosses Third Creek
but these were much closer to the Henley Street and railroad bridges
so maybe there are nests there too or even in the framework of the
stadium itself.

A few Barn Swallows were seen as well but most interesting was a
BANK SWALLOW. I've seen them here around the TN River before but
this is a pretty late date. Perhaps nesting along the bluff? Anyone
in that area frequently should keep watch.

A pair of Starlings had a nest with young in the rafters near
where we were sitting and was constantly bringing in food. They
were a little nervous at first and more than once aborted their
approach due to a sudden "yeeha!" from the crowd but they soon
got used to all the commotion. I really felt sorry for the folks
sitting below us every time one left the nest and did a fecal-sac
bombing raid on the crowd. REVENGE!
