Hello, I visited Sharp's Ridge and the Third Creek Greenway in Knoxville today, and had a good mix of continuing winter birds and new arrivals. On Sharp's Ridge I encountered 5 Black-throated Green, 3 Yellow-throated and 3 Black-and-White Warblers, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, and 4 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. I also had 2 Brown Creepers, and a Winter Wren singing by the old fire tower. Along Third Creek I saw another Yellow-throated Warbler, a B&W Warbler, two Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Northern Parula (singing two different versions of his song), another Blue-headed Vireo, and at least 5 B-g Gnatcatchers. An Osprey and 3 Ring-billed Gulls flew over, and a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks seem to be setting up shop near the bridge behind Laurel Church of Christ. A Brown Creeper and a beautiful male Purple Finch were near an old canebrake. 25 species on Sharp's Ridge and 38 along Third Creek, with 5 species of warblers for the day. In the "other sightings" category, there were about 6-7 cars slowly driving up and down the road along Sharp's Ridge, despite the "No Cruising" signs. There were several other signs of use/misuse. It's been a while (10+ years) since I've been up there, and I was a bit unsettled by how obvious and blatant the unsavory element is relative to years past. Comments?
