Phil and I spent the morning birding at Kykker Bottoms and Chota WMA. The highlight at Kykker was an American Bittern feeding along one of the levees, apparently with some success. I couldn't see what it caught, but did see it capture something and down it. We first spotted it from the observation tower, then parked and walked to see it from the road. My first for Tennessee and one of my favorite birds! We had a singing Parula, lots of Field Sparrows and a single White-Crowned Sparrow. At Chota we found a female Hooded Merganser, a pair of juvenile Bald Eagles, Northern Shovelers, Green and Blue-winged Teal, a couple of Yellowlegs (too far to be sure, but I think Greater), 12 White-eyed Vireos, 18 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, our foy male Rubythroated Hummingbird, singing Hooded Warbler and good numbers of "the usuals". We wound up with 52 species, not bad!
