    10 Feb. 03
I decided about midday I had enough of paperwork and decided it was
time to get out in the melting snow and look for birds.
After 4 years of looking for a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in Campbell County, TN,
and at the end of a 3 hour search today in excellent looking habitat,
there he was! The Shrike was located on Hwy 63 (between Lafollette and
Well Springs community in Campbell County ) adjacent to the Doaks Creek
TVA area, and apx. 8 miles from the Claiborne County, TN location where
I found a Shrike last fall.
I also birded the TVA areas/fields as well as
back roads around Powell Valley and Doaks Creek Loop Rd.
I had 31 species, with lots of birds frantically feeding on bare
ground areas where the snow was melting. These birds were very hungry and
therefore easily approachable for excellent close up looks.

Among these were:
3 FOX SPARROWS
5 WHITE CROWNED SP. (Doaks Creek TVA )
Song, SAVANNAH- 16 Junco and White Throated Sparrow were numerous.
Hawks were Red- Tail (a pair at Doaks Creek)
One of these Red-Tail Hawks was exceptionally light colored, and had
hardly any tail! I had quite a moment of excitement as I looked at him at
about 500 ft. away before using my scope, and thought
at first it may be a snowy owl by the view I had between tree limbs and
the angle he was sitting. I wasn't to be that lucky today.
2 AMERICAN KESTREL (a male and a female in separate areas) and
Red-Shoulder Hawk were seen within a mile of the area.
1 EASTERN PHOEBE was seen in a cattle lot, and YELLOW-RUMP WARBLERS
seemed to be everywhere today as I was birding in thickets of Cedar
Trees.
Very noticeably absent for this time of year were Cedar Waxwings . None
were seen or heard, and I have not seen any in the county since well
before Christmas. The Cedar Trees are virtually void of berries, and I
remember some of the very
low temperatures and ice early winter froze the fruit and it fell off
then.

5 HOODED MERGANSERS were in a cove on Norris Lake.

The Shrike was still the thrill for the day as he was my target bird I
started out looking for. Hopefully I can find nesting evidence in this
area in the Spring.
