Yesterday late afternoon, as I was working on the powerpoint on Sandhill Cranes that I was to deliver in a few hours, I heard the faint intriguing chips that I was certain were those of a Louisiana Waterthrush. I had walked our creeks earlier in the day, and yesterday, but couldn't pull myself away from the computer to check out the chips. This morning there were two very vocal male Louisiana Waterthrush singing before dawn and battling for which one got the territory that includes our house. I believe the birds came in yesterday afternoon. In the past I've found the first male to arrive will sing very infrequently. If our house were not in the middle of a territory, he could have gone undetected for several days. I've never used playback to check for early arrivals.
