April 20, 2011 Treatment Plants in Memphis Another storm front delivers more Lesser Yellowlegs than I've seen here in quite a few years. The North Plant still holds too much water and therefore few areas for birds to feed or rest and with Black-necked Stilts taking control of what little areas are above the water for nests. The Long-billed Dowitcher is still present and 8 spotted, Spotted Sandpipers were a new high number down there with OK numbers of Lesser Legs and Solitary Sandpipers but just a few scattered Wind Birds of other species. Big numbers of elegant Blue-wing Teal everywhere today. At the "Pits" in Ensley was another story with Lesser Yellowlegs stacked in like cordwood. When a Peregrine had them stirred up and then landing in bunches in different pools, different pods would hold 250+ birds. Highest count on Legs for the day came when everything settled after the Peregrine fed, after 1:30, a total of only 4 Greater but 797+ Lesser Yellowlegs with more hidden in thick vegetation. Also found in the mix, a dull plumaged male Wilson's Phalarope and a near breeding Long-billed Dowitcher, a few Dulin breaking out with spots on their bellies, 6 Semipalmated Plovers, 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 6 Western, 3 plain-Jane Stilt Sandpipers, scattered Spotted Sandpipers, tons of Solitary hiding in every nook and cranny, plus lots of slick looking Pectoral and Least Sandpipers in multi-variations of colorful plumage's, and Black-necked Stilts standing around bickering with each other after being pushed together by the compelling Peregrine. A great day for sitting and watching Wind Birds doing their thing, with only 16 species tallied but hordes hopefully on the way. Warblers in Lauderdale County on the Bluff today. Good Birding!!
