10-20-03 This afternoon at Cove lake State Park in Campbell County, TN I had an excellent look at a Lincoln's Sparrow. The bird was located in tall grasses in the swampy area near the center of the walkway that leads towards the road. (Near the Willows) It was in the company of many Song Sparrows and Swamp Sparrows. **POSSIBLE GREAT WHITE HERON. Also at Cove Lake this eve. nearing dark, I observed a large white "Egret" that had grayish/greenish legs near the observation tower located off the back parking area. The bird was preening and standing fully out of the water on a log. Upon examining this bird as well as I could without my scope from apx. 150 ft. away, I noted the bill looked large/ bulkier than a Great Egret's, and the bird seemed as large as a nearby Great Blue Heron. He just seemed "stockier" than a Great Egret should. There was not enough daylight left to have time to return home for the scope. Just as I was leaving, he was chased by the Great Blue and moved a long distance out onto the lake, and was last seen wading deeply in the water . I will be attempting to relocate this bird in the morning for a better look. My past records do show Great Egrets present at Cove Lake this time of year, however this bird warrants a closer look. The habitat at Cove Lake St. Pk is excellent this fall. There is a marshy area in the middle of the park near the ball fields that has been allowed to grow up to 2-3 ft. high. It is excellent habitat for Rails/ Marsh Wrens etc. If anyone is interested in birding here Wed. am. please contact me, and I will be glad to meet you there.
