April 21, 2011 Lauderdale Co. TN Heavy clouds and breezy winds did not bode well for a repeat of the 31 warbler species, Mark Greene, Mike Todd and I found before noon one May Day a few years back. Today, it was just me and my Song Finder running the loess soil bluffs and walking up, canyon like sandy creeks that slice into these, almost vertical, bluffs. After searching the winding narrow roads on top and at the bottom of the bluffs and garnering just a few pockets of birds in mixed but quiet flocks. I hit the mother load walking back into the sand bottomed washes. Here out of the wind, silent warblers fed with scattered vireos, tanagers and Indigos. Six and a half hours, produced a fine collection of 21 species of warblers with 3 male Golden-winged taking the prize for unexpected beauties but many runners-up for class and stealth. On the way home, in Tipton County and a jag over into Haywood County produced scattered Wind Birds in wet areas, best being 2 small flocks of Golden-Plovers just west of Rialto in Tipton and for the 3rd year, in the same field, 2 Uplands off of Highway 222 in Haywood. At home, the wind had weakened and the trees were full of Yellow-rumps plus a single, chirping Rose-breasted Grosbeak and a singing Philadelphia Vireo. Now back to Wind Birds..................
