This morning (2/19/2010) at 4:00 a.m. the usual pre-dawn chorus of Barred and Great Horned Owls at Moss Island WMA was joined by the deep throaty monotone of a single Long-eared Owl. This was in the fields and tree lines in the western part of the WMA, the same general area that has turned up a Rough-legged Hawk and a Common Ground-Dove in recent years. The previous afternoon (2/18/10) I flushed a Short-eared Owl from the fields along Great River Road in the southern corner of the WMA, so it was a full set of the "Eared Owls" in less than 24 hours. The Moss Island bird list now includes every regularly occurring Tennessee owl except for Northern Saw-whet.
