Tn-birders, OK, so I meant to say Long-tailed Ducks AND White-winged Scoters. I got someone's attention anyway. My wife and I, along with Frank Bills and Sharon Bostick, went back to Cherokee Dam today to see if we could find the Long-tailed Ducks and also to try to find the White-winged Scoters that have been reported recently. We found 5 (previously there have been 4) Long-tailed Ducks and 3 White-winged Scoters. These were seen from the north end of the dam (the part where earth and rocks make up the dam, not the concrete dam itself). This is the area where Hamblen, Grainger, and Jefferson counties come together. If you look at the Tennessee Gazetteer, page 60, you will see highway 375 marked just above the dam. This is the area we were looking from. Actually, about 100 feet further north on 375 from where you would normally turn in to park by the big white tanks, is another gravel road that goes down closer to the lake and you can park and walk out into the lake on an exposed peninsula (since the water level is low). From here, we met Robert and Leigh Loveday and were able to see the scoters from only about 100 yards away. The Long-taileds never got very close, but we could see them fairly well with a good scope. Great birding to all, Ron Hoff Clinton, Tn. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net Owner: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx (423) 764-3958 =========================================================
